REVISION OF SCHEDULE FOR THE REVIEW OF THE DIABLO CANYON NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION
Dear Mr. Conway:
Enclosed is a revised schedule for the review of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1 and 2, license renewal application. The schedule has been updated to reflect a change in the date for the issuance of the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) and subsequent milestones.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) plans to issue the Draft SEIS by February 18, 2011. This change will also affect the date of the public meeting to receive comments on the Draft SEIS, which will now occur in March 2011, with a specific date yet to be determined. The NRC has several ongoing license renewal reviews on similar schedules, and any delay in resolving technical issues in one project affects review schedules of other projects.
In the Diablo Canyon review, the NRC staff requires additional time to complete a thorough review of severe accident mitigation alternatives and of effects to marine ecology. At this point, the staff has extended the date for issuance of the Final SEIS to October 21, 2011.
