Dear Megan,

Attached is the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for June 2010. In June, Inwater Research Group biologists captured thirty (30) Caretta caretta and three (3) Chelonia mydas at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. During the month there were no mortalities and no turtles required rehabilitation.

Throughout the month of June the temporary barrier net experienced light loads of algae that entered into the intake canal. This temporary barrier net has effectively kept turtles from moving further down the canal. A permanent fix to this net is expected in 2011. Underwater Engineering Service Inc.(UESI) started cleaning of the temporary net on June 15 and continued into July. UESI also conducted a quarterly net inspection on the primary net (5 inch) and the secondary net (8 inch). During this inspection two holes were found in the primary net (5 inch) and mended. There were no holes found in the secondary net (8 inch).

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all the turtles is attached. Also attached is the spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and month/year to date for 2010. This spreadsheet also includes and tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the month of June, which includes totals and percentages.
