May 2010 St. Lucie Plant Canal Captures

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for May 2010. In May, we captured sixteen (16) Caretta caretta at the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. During the month there were no mortalities and no turtles required rehabilitation.

Throughout the month the temporary barrier net has effectively kept turtles from moving further down the canal. A permanent fix to this net is expected in 2011. Underwater Engineering Services Inc. (UESI) continued cleaning the 16 pipe in conjunction with the St. Lucie Unit 1 refueling outage.

Tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles are attached. Also, attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month/year to date for 2010. This spreadsheet also includes and tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the month of May which includes totals and percentage.
