TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY (TVA) - BELLEFONTE NUCLEAR PLANT (BLN)

PROJECT - TVA BOARD OF DIRECTORS' DECISION FUNDING THE NEXT PROJECT PHASE DURING FISCAL YEAR 2011 The purpose of this letter is to inform the NRC of the TVA Board of Directors' decision, on August 20, 2010, to provide funding for additional work on Bellefonte Unit 1 (BLN Unit 1) to maintain the option for future power generation. At the August 20 Board meeting, the TVA Board confirmed completion of the partially constructed BLN Unit 1 as-the preferred alternative for additional generation capacity at the Bellefonte site. The details and basis for this decision are contained in the Record of Decision (ROD), issued on August 27, 2010, regarding the Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for a Single Nuclear Unit at the Bellefonte Plant Site, Jackson County, Alabama (FSEIS). The FSEIS was published May 21, 2010. The TVA Board's authorization, for Fiscal Year 2011, will support additional project work including continued asset and facility preservation, initial engineering and design, procurement of some long-lead components, and development of a licensing Regulatory Framework. Determination regarding the final project approval will be made following the ongoing TVA Integrated Resource Plan.

TVA will continue to work closely with the NRC Staff as we progress forward during this next phase of the Bellefonte project.
