Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary February 2008
Dear Meghan,
Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for February 2008. In February, we captured twenty (20) Caretta caretta and twelve (12)
Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on South Hutchinson Island. The temporary, primary barrier net was inspected on February 28 and several gaps were found at the base of the net. These were fixed and for the following three days extensive visual surveys of the canal to the west of the net were conducted. During these surveys no sea turtles were sighted west of the temporary net. In February, one loggerhead was sent to a rehabilitation facility after consultation with FWCC personnel. The compromised condition of this turtle was not causal to power plant operation. Also in February, one loggerhead was found dead at the surface of the barrier net. This turtle was emaciated and had a heavy epibiont (barnacles, algae...etc.) load. After discussing this event with FWCC personell, it was determined that this mortality was not causal to power plant operation. All other turtles captured in February were released back to the ocean on the same day of capture.
Tag numbers and morphmetric data for all turtles are attached. Also attached is a spreadsheet of all captures, mortalities, injuries and causal events delineated by species and month for 2008. This spreadsheet will be updated monthly and included in our monthly report to your agency. This spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes
2 and will be helpful in determining the success of the intake pipe cleaning project. If you have any questions or comments about the enclosed data please contact me at your convenience.
Sincerely, Michael J. Bresette Sr. Environmental Specialist Quantum Resources, Inc.
