UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 June 25, 2010 Mr. David A. Heacock President and Chief Nuclear Officer Virginia Electric and Power Company Innsbrook Technical Center 5000 Dominion Boulevard Glen Allen, VA 23060-6711
SUBJECT:
NORTH AN 1\\1 A POWER STATION, UNIT I\\IOS. 1 AND 2 - DAM SAFETY INSPECTION AND OPERATION REPORT FOR THE SERVICE WATER RESERVOIR DAM
Dear Mr. Heacock:
On May 11, 2010, a routine safety inspection was conducted at Virginia Electric and Power Company's (VEPCO's) North Anna Power Station, Unit Nos. 1 and 2, service water reservoir (SWR) facilities that provide the cooling water for unit shutdown during emergency conditions.
The staff of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has received and evaluated the final report from its technical assistance contractor, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), related to this inspection. The inspection did not identify any conditions that represent a threat to the safety or the operation of the SWR.
The NRC staff concurs with the conclusions stated in the FERC report (Enclosure). The inspection included the main earth dam, the emergency diversion dike, pump house, valve house, and the immediate topographic features around the SWR. Based on this inspection and data submitted by VEPCO, the SWR structures appeared to be adequately maintained and in satisfactory condition. No adverse variations, trends or anomalies were noted. No features were observed that would adversely affect the immediate safety, permanence, and operational reliability of the structure.
The information in the report is considered critical energy infrastructure information. Thus, the enclosure is considered sensitive security-related information, official use only, and is marked accordingly.
