Salem/ Hope Creek Environmental Audit - Post-Audit Information Question #: ENV-106 Category:
Alternatives Statement of Question:
Please provide, for analysis purposes, the distance to a natural gas pipeline capable of supporting a natural gas-fired generation alternative located at the Salem or Hope Creek site.
Response
Construction of a new LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) Terminal has been proposed in Logan Township, Gloucester County, New Jersey. However, because considerable controversy has been associated with placement of a LNG terminal at this site, construction and operation of such a facility in the near future is considered unlikely. Even so, two interstate natural gas pipelines thought to be 20 inches or larger based on review of a national pipeline map were determined to already cross the proposed LNG terminal property in Logan Township. One is owned by Transco and the other is owned by Columbia Gas Transmission Company. Therefore, whether or not the proposed LNG terminal is constructed, its proposed site in Logan Township could be a source of LNG fuel for a natural gas-fired generation alternative. For this reason, PSEG Nuclear recommends assuming, for analysis purposes, that a pipeline approximately 25 miles in length would need to be constructed to support a natural gas-fired generation alternative at Salem or Hope Creek.
