Dear Mr. Colomb:

The State of New Hampshire, through the State agencies charged with maintaining public health and safety, has had an active interest in the events that started to unfold on January 7, 2010, related to a reported finding of elevated levels of tritium in water from on-site test wells at the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power plant (Vermont Yankee). Our staff has attended several meetings and participated in conference calls, on-site technical visits, and sampling and testing of water near and around the New Hampshire border area closest to Vermont Yankee. We have appreciated the availability of information and communications with Vermont Yankee staff as events developed.

We understand that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is charged with inspection and monitoring of the Vermont Yankee response to the reported tritium leak. We will be requesting copies of NRC reports and findings as they become available. In the interim, we respectfully request copies of Vermont Yankee reports on this matter, specifically the root cause analysis and the remediation plan. We have, through our active participation, gleaned pieces of these plans but it would be helpful to have complete documents in writing that would provide us with a clear set of steps and expected outcomes relative to the analysis of the current problem, the time frames and steps needed for successful resolution of the current problem, and the plan for prevention of potential future problems involving the leakage of radioactive contaminants.

Please contact us if you have any questions regarding this request or to provide an estimate of the time frame for sending us the requested documents. Our primary point of contact is Rick Cricenti, Director, Emergency Services Unit, Department of Health and Human Services, and he may be reached at 603-271-4322 or rick.cricenti@dhhs.state.nh.us. We appreciate your cooperation and thank you for keeping us informed over the past several months.

Sincerely,

\\
