NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGION I 475 ALLENDALE ROAD KING OF PRUSSIA, PENNSYLVANIA 19406-1415 March 15, 2010 Chris Hansen Preservation Planner Utah State History 300 S. Rio Grande Street Salt Lake City, UT 84101

SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR A SECTION 106 REVIEW

Dear Mr. Hansen:

This is a request for a Section 106 review. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the Commission) is considering issuance of a renewed Facility Operating License No. R-126, to be held by University of Utah (U of U or the licensee), which would authorize continued operation of the University of Utah TRIGA Reactor (UUTR), located in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake County, Utah (The Project). The proposed action would renew Facility Operating License No. R-126 (The research reactor at the University of Utah) for a period of twenty years from the date of issuance of the renewed license, and would increase the licensed maximum steady-state power level to 250 kilowatts thermal power (kW(t)).

The site is not eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The reactor is housed within the Merrill Engineering Building on the campus of the University of Utah. The building had completed construction in 1967. The reactor was built in 1972-74 and commenced operation around October 1975, a period less than 50 years. Determination: No Historic Properties.

The impact on the site is that there is No Effect. The renewal of the license would allow the test reactor to continue operations as it has for the past 25 years except at a higher power. The higher power would be a minor change being proposed when considered for the impact on the building or surrounding environment.

I am requesting your concurrence of the above determination. If you desire more information, much is publically available at the following locations:
