Site  : SALEM Emergency Class  : NON EMERGENCY "At approximately 09:30 on July 31,2008 a deceased sturgeon was removed from the Circulating Water System (CWS) Intake trash racks at the Salem Generating Station.

Environmental licensing was contacted to evaluate the sturgeon to detemine reportability. The sturgeon was identified as a Shortnose Sturgeon (Acipenser brevirostrum). Shortnose sturgeon are federally listed as 'endangered' species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended. Under the incidental take statement and Salem NPDES permit this requires a 24-hour notification to New Jersey Fish and Wildlife and the National Marine Fisheries Service which was made at 1100 on July 31,2008. This event was required to be reported to NRC in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR50.72(b)(2)(xi).

"The NRC Resident Inspector was notified on July 31,2008 at 0939."

Notified the R1DO (Barkley) and NRC HQ Endanged Species Office.
