Dear Mr. Pardee:

By letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) dated May 5,2009 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML091260459), Exelon Generation Company, LLC submitted a request to use an alternative to the requirements of the 1989 Edition of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure vessel Code '

Section IX, Article IWA-4000, for repair and replacement activities, for the Clinton Power Station, Unit NO.1.

The NRC staff is reviewing your submittal and has determined that additional information is required to complete the review. The specific information requested is addressed in the enclosure to this letter. During a discussion with your staff on September 29, 2009, it was agreed that you would provide a response within 30 days from the date of this letter.

The NRC staff considers that timely responses to requests for additional information help ensure sufficient time is available for staff review and contribute toward the NRC s goal of efficient and effective use of staff resources. related to Relief Request 1203, for the Clinton Power Station, Unit NO.1 (Clinton), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has determined that the following information is needed in order to complete its review:

1. What minimum preheat temperature will be applied for all of this welding?
2. What method is to be used for the preheat application?
3. Will the preheat be maintained from the start of welding until the completion of welding?
4. How will the preheat and interpass temperature maintenance be measured?
5. Will the preheat for the procedure qualification be performed at the 300°F temperature and not at 400°F as allowed by American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

6. Describe the system of electrode control and storage to be used for this welding.
7. What is the actual thickness of the base metal at the welded joint for each material, including the ASME SA-217, Grade WC9 valve?
8. The exemption for the ASME SA-217, Grade WC9 valve cannot be included in the relief request authorization until all the particulars, Le., base metal chemistry, etc. of the certified material test report are produced for NRC review.
