SUMMARY
OF THE APRIL 29, 2009, PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS THE PROGRESS ON ACTIONS TAKEN IN RESPONSE TO A NUCLEAR SAFETY CULTURE SURVEY IN 2008 On April 29, 2009, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) held a public meeting at the Point Beach Energy Center in Two Creeks, Wisconsin. The meeting was between NRC Region III management and NextEra Energy Point Beach, LLC representatives 1) to discuss the progress on actions taken in response to a nuclear safety culture survey conducted for the licensee at Point Beach in 2008, and 2) to discuss why the licensee believed that actions proposed in an October 2, 2008, letter will be more effective than actions previously undertaken to address longstanding substantive cross-cutting issues in the human performance and problem identification and resolution areas. The letter dated October 2, 2008, is in ADAMS at ML082770143.
The NRC began the meeting with introductions and a statement of the purpose of the meeting.
The licensee then made its presentation. The licensees meeting presentation slides can be found in ADAMS at ML091200721. A list of principal meeting attendees can be found in the attached Enclosure.
In its presentation, the licensee discussed the improvements made, and remaining challenges, in various processes and programs related to problem identification and resolution, human performance (in the documentation area), and in safety culture. Mr. Jones, of the licensee, concluded the presentation by emphasizing the utilitys nuclear excellence model as well-developed and supported by a strong, committed utility that has invested resources in improving the equipment, process, and people at Point Beach and has put in place a leadership team engaged and active in improving the plant and ensuring the improvements are sustained.
L. Meyer At the end of the meeting, members of the public were given the opportunity to ask questions of NRC officials.
