VIRGIL C. SUMMER NUCLEAR STATION DOCKET NO. 50/395 OPERATING LICENSE NO. NPF-12 SPECIAL REPORT (SPR) 2008-005-01 South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G) is submitting this revised report pursuant to the requirements of Technical Specification 3.3.3.1.b. This report addresses the inoperability of the Main Steam Line radiation monitor RM-G1 9C for greater than 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br />.
During the inoperable period, V. C. Summer Nuclear Station (VCSNS) implemented a preplanned alternate method of monitoring in accordance with the requirements of Action 30 of the Technical Specification.
RM-G19C was declared inoperable September 2, 2008. On October 2, 2008, the Universal Digital Ratemeter (UDR) was replaced and RM-G1 9C was restored to operable status.
Subsequently, with vendor support, the communication board of the UDR was determined to be the specific cause of the UDR failure. The vendor believes the communication board failure was heat related and an isolated case related to a specific batch of communication boards. VCSNS has procured a spare communication board in case of future failure.
