Thank you for the EPRI reports.

Have you finalized a date when NRC and industry can have a public meeting to discuss some of the important issues to be covered in the draft RG DG-1 146? I encourage you to come up with a date as soon as possible in order for us to reach a common understand and to finalize the draft RG for public comment.

Tony

July 20, 2006 Mr. Eugene V. Imbro Chief, Mechanical and Civil Engineering Branch Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555-0001 PROJECT NUMBER: 689

Dear Mr. Imbro:

Enclosed for NRC review are the following EPRI reports associated with the development of seismic ground motion at a new nuclear power plant site:

Sensitivity of Performance-Based Approaches for Determining the 1

SSEjiGtound Motion for New Plant Sites, Use of CAV in Determining Effects of Small Magnitude Earthquakes on Seismic Hazard Analyses,

  • Program on Technology Innovation: Truncation of the Lognormal Distribution and Value of the Standard Deviation for Ground Motion Models in the Central and Eastern United States.

These reports, which were submitted earlier this year, have been revised to take into account NRC requests for additional information and NRC comments made during the public meetings on these subjects. The two enclosed data sheets are associated with the report titled, Use of CAV in Determining Effects of Small Magnitude Earthquakes on Seismic Hazard Analyses.

Also enclosed for NRC use and discussion is a draft report, Guidance for Determination of Performance-Based (Risk-lnformed) Site Specific Safe Shutdown Earthquake Response Spectra for Future Nuclear Plants, which could be used as input to the regulatory guidance that is being developed in relation to the performance-based approach for determining seismic ground motion.

Sincerely, Adrian P. Heymer Senior Director, New Plant Deployment Nuclear Generation Division Nuclear Energy Institute (202) 739-8094 aph(,,nei. orq
