TMI project makes ducks feel at home - The York Daily Record Homes Cars Jobs Print Email Font Resize TMI project makes ducks feel at home By GREG GROSS For the Daily Record/Sunday News Updated: 03/02/2009 12:02:54 AM EST Out of courtesy, Craig Coble knocked on the door of the duck box before he loosened two screws and opened the door.
Nonetheless, the little red screech owl didn't look happy to see visitors.
The nocturnal bird's yellow eyes darted as it clearly tried to figure out why someone was disturbing him and his home.
After holding the owl for a few minutes, Coble released it. The bird promptly flew to the nearest tree, perched on a limb and watched Coble and two other men clean out the bird box, replacing the straw and feathers with wood shavings.
Coble -- an employee and a natural resources committee member with Exelon, the company that owns Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, which sits in the Susquehanna River -- and the other men were among about 11 volunteers on the southern part of the island installing bird boxes Sunday morning.
"We'll run out of boxes before we run out of space," Coble said.
Another group of volunteers ventured around the island putting up 20 blue bird boxes.

TMI project makes ducks feel at home - The York Daily Record The project was a joint effort between the Capitol Area Ducks Unlimited chapter and Exelon. Youths built the 10 duck boxes last year during an event at Bass Pro Shops in the Harrisburg Mall.
The secure island has proved to be a thriving habitat for wildlife.
As two SUVs and a truck made their way over a gravel path Sunday morning, deer stood Jeremy Mercer, left, and Ray Arment install a duck box on Three Mile Island. Ducks will soon be choosing nesting spots to hatch their young.
(Daily Record/Sunday News - Paul Kuehnel) in the forest along both sides of the road. Once the convoy turned off the gravel road onto snow-covered dirt, navigating the fairly young forest would have been nearly impossible without a four-wheel-drive vehicle.
The trucks rolled to a stop, and the men quickly got to work hammering the tall wooden post with a duck box attached into the ground.
The boxes aren't placed at random. Each one faces south and is positioned a few feet downriver from a tree that would protect it from debris should the Susquehanna River rise and submerge the land, said Jeremy Mercer, regional director with Ducks Unlimited.
"(The ducks) use them for a few weeks to raise their young," Mercer said.
And the time for nesting is coming fast. Coble This well-used nest from a duck box has feathers from a wood duck, feathers from an owl and the remnants of a recent meal. (Daily Record/Sunday News - Paul Kuehnel) said ducks will begin searching for nesting spots in a few weeks to hatch their young.
After the ducks are finished with the box, it's up for grabs for other birds.
Paul Stokes, a member of Ducks Unlimited from Middletown, said he's been placing bird boxes along the river for about 40 years.
He has no doubt the boxes help the local duck population flourish.
"Yeah, it does help," he said. "The ducks are the ones that need the TLC."
