March 6, 2009 Mr. Samuel J. Collins Regional Administrator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region I 475 Allendale Road King of Prussia, PA 19406-1415
Dear Mr. Collins:
As President of the Westchester County Association, I would like to offer our organizations strong support for the relicensing of Indian Point.
In focusing on the long-term needs of our region, the issue of energy is one of the three most identified issues most often identified by my members. The availability of affordable, reliable baseload power is critical to creating jobs, stimulating investment and growing our economy. Indian Point does just that.
Not only does Indian Point produce more than 2,000 megawatts of reliable baseload power - but it produces it in an emissions free manner. It is also responsible for an economic impact approaching three-quarters of a billion dollars, and also responsible for more than one thousand jobs. In these tight economic times, those facts clearly speak for themselves.
Indian Points operator Entergy is also an important presence in our community - donating millions of dollars to schools, health care facilities and other worthy causes. And Indian Point is an important steward of the environment - helping New York achieve the distinction of having one of the lowest per-capita carbon emissions counts in the nation.
As you continue your deliberations, I ask you to look at the facts carefully. When evaluated using a sober and reasonable approach, I am sure you will agree that Indian Point remains a critical component of our regions energy supply, which provides the economic and environmental benefits that our region rightfully deserves.
Thank you for the opportunity to share our views, and I strongly urge you to support the relicensing of Indian Point.
Sincerely yours, William M. Mooney, Jr.
