- 1) Thedangertohumanlife.IndianPointislocatedinoneofthemostdenselypopulatedareasintheU.S.
Approximately20millionpeoplelivewithina50mileradiusoftheplants.Iliveabout20milessouthofthe reactors.Iftherewereaterroristattackoranaccidentinthespentfuelpools,thecatastrophewouldmake September11attackontheWorldTradeCenterlookminiscule.
Themostrecentleak(Feb.20,2009)ofradioactivewateratIP2isanexampleofwhathasbeenhappening routinelyforyears.Itissaidthatthismostrecentleakhadtritiumconcentrationsofonly1/10theallowable concentrationsallowedbyfederalcleanwaterregulationsfordrinkingwater.PrevioustritiumleaksatIP@came fromitsspentfuelpoolinconcentrationsthatwere25timestheacceptableEPAlevel.Personally,Ithinkonly NOleveloftritiumisacceptablefordrinkingwater.
- 2) Thenegativeenvironmentalconsequences:Billionsoffish,eggsandlarvaeareslaughteredeveryyearbecause oftheoutdatedcoolingsystematIP.Shortnosesturgeon(anendangeredspecies)andAtlanticsturgeonare killedwhentheyaretrappedagainstthecoolingwaterintakescreensattheplants.
Yes,weneedsourcesofenergybutweshouldbeabletoandbeencouragingalternateformsofhumanand ecologicallyfriendlysourceswhichwouldalsocreatejobs.
