- Jim, As far as sampling of public water supplies, that is the purview of the DOH. The local DOH reps do routine sampling for normal (non-rad) parameters and would likely be the ones to do any additional sampling for State involvement. If John White spoke with Barbara Youngberg, our radiation section chief, she would probably have explained this to him. In case he did not get that information, you can contact Adela Salame-Alfie, head of the DOH rad program, and she can probably help you with this. She can be reached at 581-402-7550. Other environmental sampling would probably be coordinated through our office here in DEC.
Have you been able to get a copy of the GZA map they are using for hydrology investigation work? we had expressed~an interest in acquiring a copy while we were at the plant.
FYI Our Agreement State Program is divided up differently than most.
DOH licenses educational and research facilities, and is responsible for anything directly related to protection of Public Health, and thus would generally be lead state agency for any'releases with a credible public health threat. They are lead state agency for response to rad emergencies.
DOL licenses commercial and industrial users.
NYC DOH generally takes, on the State DOH roles within the City, with certain exceptions.
DEC permits releases to the environment, regulates LLRW disposal and transportation, and is generally lead agency for any non-public health threat environmental releases.
SEMO is responsible for emergency planning and response logistics, and provides coordination for other agency involvement, including radiological events.
I understand that John White has offered to come to Albany to discuss State involvement in the ongoing investigation. If there is need for clarification on agency roles it can probably be addressed at that time.

It is good to hear from you and thanks for the tip regarding USGS expertise. This might be very useful to the NRC. Thanks and let me know how we can anticipate your needs. My boss, John White, has asked your Office about public water supply sampling as an area that could provide the public with a feeling of safety even though there is no connection with the Indian Point ground water.

- Jim, I have a call in to John Williams of the USGS regarding if and how you might be able to engage their efforts at Indian Point.
