We are pleased to inform you that Dr. William B. McCarthy has assumed the duties of the MIT Reactor Radiation Protection Officereffective 5 January 2009. Dr. McCarthy graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1988 with a B.S. degree in Physics. He subsequently attended the University of Massachusetts at Lowell where he obtained a M.S. in Radiological Sciences and his PhD in Physics in 1996. Dr. McCarthy has been a member of the MIT Environment, Health, and Safety Office since 1997 where he specialized in Radiation Protection. He also assisted during that time in the analysis of a number of important matters for the MIT Research Reactor (MITR). As a result he already has familiarity with the MITR.

Dr. McCarthy is certified in health physics by the American Academy of Health Physics, and he is a member of the Health Physics Society. As such, he brings the necessary skills and enthusiasm to the position, and we anticipate continued progress with our ALARA program and other initiatives under his stewardship of the MITR Radiation Protection Office.
