SAFETY EVALUATION REPORT RELATED TO THE LICENSE RENEWAL OF THE VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2
Dear Mr. Tynan:
By letter dated June 28, 2007, Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. (SNC) submitted, for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) review, an application to renew the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant (VEGP), Units 1 and 2, operating licenses for up to an additional 20 years. The license renewal application (LRA) was submitted pursuant to Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 54, Requirements for Renewal of Operating Licenses for Nuclear Power Plants. The staff determined that the LRA was complete and acceptable for docketing on August 21, 2007.
Since that time, the staff has reviewed the VEGP LRA, issued requests for additional information (RAIs), reviewed the applicants responses to the staffs RAIs, developed a draft safety evaluation report (D-SER), and reviewed the applicants comments on the D-SER. The D-SER was discussed at an Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) subcommittee meeting on November 5, 2008. On the basis of this review, the staff has developed the enclosed SER to document its findings associated with the safety review of the LRA and supporting documentation for Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2.
This SER is scheduled to be discussed at the ACRS full committee meeting on April 2, 2009.
