Request for Support, Public Meeting on Groundwater contamination, Indian Point Pat:
Previously, Stephanie Bush-Goddard provided support to RIII in a public meeting involving a contaminated groundwater issue involving Braidwood. Stephanie provided discussion and information in an effort to put radiological risk associated with the low level of groundwater contamination into perspective for members of the public. RI is planning a public meeting relative to issues concerning groundwater contamination at Indian Point on May 20, 2008 in the IPEC area. I expect that similar angst may be expressed even though the estimated exposure to the public is only a small fraction of the 10CFR50 Appendix I guidelines that are expressed as regulatory requirements in the ODCM.
This is to request your support to Region I in the same manner with regard to Indian Point relative to its groundwater issues. The purpose of public meeting on May 20 is to discuss the outcome of our inspection and review of licensee performance relative to groundwater contamination issues at that facility, including readiological and hydrological assessment. I will provide you a copy of a draft of the inspection report for your information. Tom Nicholson, RES was also a member of our inspection team and would be able to provide you with insights from his experience.
In addition to the expected angst (or possible outrage) on any level of groundwater contamination, even if negligible, members of the public have previously expressed concerns on the matter based on their selective understanding of BEIR VII, reports and opinions expressed in the Tooth Fairy project, and opinions that are typical of that presented in: http://heyokamagazine.com/HEYOKA.9SherwoodMartinelli.2.htm We would appreciate your support relative to this public meeting; and if possible, a government to government meeting that is planned for May 9.
