Groundwater contamination at Indian Point and license renewal We had a call with the licensee today to discuss the trends on the samples from the monitoring wells near IP2 for groundwater at the site. They are not seeing much of a decrease of tritium in the wells (in some cases they saw an increase). The readings can be affected by the amount of rain. About the end of the 1st quarter 2009, the licensee plans to inform us of their observations. They wanted to let us know that their conclusion might be that a very small leak continues from the Indian Point 2 spent fuel pool. There is nothing firm yet. If the leak continues, there is nothing they can do to stop it, so it would continue for the life of the plant. They do have the ability to switch to active pumping, where they pump out groundwater, but they don't intend to do that (the tritium still goes into the Hudson River that way, just through the normal release path) because it doesn't make sense (you lose the radioactive decay inherent in slow underground travel). I just wanted to let you know the situation in case you think it has any bearing on license renewal.
