Dear Governor Salmon:
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I would like to thank you for the comments you provided during our October 14, 2008, public meeting on the Vermont Yankee cooling towers. I sincerely apologize that you were unable to complete your statements due to the conduct of some of the audience members. As I know you are aware, the issues surrounding Vermont Yankee can strike an emotional chord with some stakeholders, at times making effective communications extremely challenging. We continue to evaluate our public outreach strategies for ways to promote civil discourse on the important subject of nuclear power plant safety. It is our responsibility to provide a forum in which all participants may voice their opinions freely and without harassment or interruption. Vermonters have a proud tradition of unfettered debate and of achieving more informed decisions by ensuring that differing perspectives are constructively aired. The NRC likewise believes in the need for public transparency and civil dialogue. I thank you for your patience as we continue to work toward that goal in Vermont and elsewhere.
