October 7, 2008 Mr. Mark Bezilla Site Vice President FirstEnergy Nuclear Operating Company Perry Nuclear Power Plant P. O. Box 97, 10 Center Road, A-PY-290 Perry, OH 44081-0097
SUBJECT:
CONFIRMATION OF INITIAL/REQUALIFICATION OPERATOR LICENSE EXAMINATIONS: PERRY NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
Dear Mr. Bezilla:
In a letter dated June 16, 2008 (L-08-182), and a letter dated July 28, 2008 (L-08-238), your staff requested we schedule initial license operator examinations in January 2009, May 2010, January 2011, and January 2012. We have tentatively scheduled the requested examinations to occur during the following weeks: January 12, 2009, May 10, 2010, January 10, 2011, and January 9, 2012. The last three examinations were scheduled on the proposed alternate examination dates rather than the proposed primary dates. On-site validation of the examinations will occur approximately three weeks prior to the start of the examinations. In the unlikely event that we are unable to support an examination during the scheduled weeks, we will inform you immediately upon discovery of such conditions and make arrangements to administer the examination at a mutually acceptable date.
We understand that your staff will develop the examinations unless we determine it is necessary for the NRC to develop an examination. Your letters indicated that each examination will have more than nine applicants. Each examination has been scheduled for two weeks to accommodate this number of applicants. Please inform us if the number of applicants declines below ten as this will impact the examination schedule. Please inform us at your earliest opportunity if you discover you need to change the scheduled dates for the examinations.
A supplementary letter will be sent to the Perry Nuclear Power Plant Training Department approximately 120 days prior to the initial examination informing them of the chief examiner=s name. The letter will also outline examination security expectations, list the materials required by the NRC to conduct the examination, reconfirm the examination dates, and reconfirm the number of candidates you have in the training program.
We have scheduled a Licensed Operator Requalification Training Program Inspection (IP 71111.11) for the week of December 1, 2008. Please inform us at your earliest opportunity if you discover this week is outside of your normally scheduled requalification training program=s annual examinations. If you have any questions concerning this information, please contact Mr. Dell McNeil of my staff at 630-829-9737.
