Dear Mr. Lott:

Congressman Steny Hoyer forwarded us your letters regarding the feasibility of constructing a trash burning facility for the Southern Maryland region. We understand your concerns and frustrations and want to do our best to assist with the improvement of this situation as quickly as possible. Be assured that the counties of Southern Maryland have preliminarily investigated the possibility of constructing and utilizing a waste-to-energy facility, but find that our counties do not generate enough trash to support such a facility, physically and economically. We would be interested to hear from any business that is looking to build such a facility for their own use and would like us to supply them with trash as a fuel source.

Unfortunately, we do not have much voice over electricity-generating nuclear power facilities, as this is overseen by the United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the United States Energy Department. Therefore, we are taking the liberty of forwarding your letter to the NRC and the Energy Department for review and response. Should you have any further questions regarding electricity-generating nuclear power facilities, we would advise you to contact the NRC and Energy Department offices directly.

Again, thank you for taking the time to bring your concerns and recommendations to our attention. If we can be of any further assistance to you, please do not hesitate to contact Mr. William Teter, Recycling Coordinator, at 410-326-0210, to discuss additional questions on this or any other solid waste or recycling related issue.
