SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF THE JUNE 10, 2008, MEETING WITH THE LICENSEE TO DISCUSS FUTURE LICENSE AMENDMENT REQUESTS FOR EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATORS (EDGs) FOR PRAIRIE ISLAND NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT (PINGP), UNITS 1 AND 2 (TAC NOS. MD8761 AND MD8762)

On June 10, 2008, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a Category 1 public meeting with representatives of Nuclear Management Company (NMC) at NRC offices in Rockville, MD. The purpose of this meeting was to discuss future license amendment requests for emergency diesel generators for PINGP, units 1 and 2. A list of attendees is provided as . The licensee=s handout material has been docketed and is publicly available at Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML081630166.

The licensees presentation, providing the list of future EDG amendments, was outlined by the handout material. The licensee provided an overview of Unit 2 EDG issues and clarification questions were asked by the NRC staff. The presentation focused on improving the reliability of Unit 2 EDGs. The PINGP Unit 2 EDGs units have spare capacity above design loads. The existing tests, based on EDG rating, are stressing the units and the licensee is interested in lowering the Technical Specifications requirements for testing the PINGP Unit 2 EDGs. The power factor and low voltage/frequency issues are NRC identified deficiencies generically applicable to licensees who have not changed their criteria to plant-specific requirements. The fuel oil storage requirements are based on TSTF 501, currently under evaluation. Licensee wants to extend the existing interval for testing the EDG trips that are bypassed in emergency mode to provide flexibility.

There were not any members of the public present at the meeting. No comment or feedback was received at this time. Please direct any inquiries to Mr. Mahesh Chawla, NRC Project Manager for PINGP, at 301-415-8371, or @ Mahesh.chawla@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
