Cook Nuclear Plant (CNP) Units 1 and 2, submitted a notification, for.exceeding NPDES Permit M10005827 to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
On May.11, 2008, Total Suspended Solids (TSS) concentration on Outfall OOH, Turbine Room Sump Emergency Overflow, exceeded the maximum daily limit of 100 milligrams per liter (mg/1).
The sample value was 102.6 mg/1 at 0041 hours4.74537e-4 days
0.0114 hours
6.779101e-5 weeks
1.56005e-5 months
on May 11, 2008.
The period of non-compliance, between 0041 hours4.74537e-4 days
0.0114 hours
6.779101e-5 weeks
1.56005e-5 months
and 2050 hours0.0237 days
0.569 hours
0.00339 weeks
7.80025e-4 months
on May 11, 2008, occurred when a pipe from the neutralization system began leaking and had to be removed from service.
Subsequent resin bed regeneration waste was discharged directly to the turbine room sump. This condition resulted in the discharge. of regeneration waste at a faster rate.than normal through Outfall OOH. The concentration lof TSS was just above the exceedence, criteria and occurred over, a period of approximately 20 hours2.314815e-4 days
0.00556 hours
3.306878e-5 weeks
7.61e-6 months
. Subject:
Cook Nuclear Plant National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES)
Permit M10005827 Exceedence
Dear Mr. Danneffel:
This notification is provided as required by Part II, Section C.6.a of NPDES Permit M10005827.
The Total Suspended Solids (TSS) concentration on Outfall OOH, Turbine Room Sump Emergency Overflow, exceeded the maximum daily limit of 100 milligrams per liter (mg/1).
Per the requirements of Cook Nuclear Plant's NPDES permit, two consecutive samples are taken whenever sampling is performed.
The first of the two samples taken on May 11, 2008, at 0040 hours4.62963e-4 days
0.0111 hours
6.613757e-5 weeks
1.522e-5 months
, indicated a TSS concentration of 99.25 mg/l, which was below the maximum daily limit. However, the TSS concentration inthe second sample, taken at 0041 hours4.74537e-4 days
0.0114 hours
6.779101e-5 weeks
1.56005e-5 months
, was 102.6 mg/l.
The actual analysis was completed on May 15, 2008.
The period of non-compliance, between 0041 hours4.74537e-4 days
0.0114 hours
6.779101e-5 weeks
1.56005e-5 months
and 2050 hours0.0237 days
0.569 hours
0.00339 weeks
7.80025e-4 months
on May 11, 2008, occurred when a pipe from the neutralization system began leaking and had to be removed from service.
Subsequent resin bed regeneration waste was discharged directly to the turbine room sump. This condition resulted in the discharge of regeneration waste at a faster rate than normal through Outfall 0OH. The concentration of TSS was just above the exceedence criteria and occurred over a period of approximately 20 hours2.314815e-4 days
0.00556 hours
3.306878e-5 weeks
7.61e-6 months
.
The pipe has been repaired and returned to service. There were no adverse environmental effects noted from this incident.
Should you have any questions, please contact me at (269) 465-5901, extension 2102.
