REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 2, RELIEF REQUEST ALTERNATIVE, FNP-ISI-ALT-01, IN-SERVICE INSPECTION (ISI)
INTERVAL DATE CHANGE TO CORRESPOND TO THE UNIT 1 DATES (TAC NO. MD8130)
Dear Mr. Johnson By letter dated October 8, 2007 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML072820172), Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. submitted a request to implement a proposed alternative (FNP ISI ALT 01, Version 1.0) to synchronize the fourth ten-year ISI interval at Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP), Units 1 and 2. Specifically, the proposal alters FNP Unit 2 ISI interval dates to correspond with FNP Unit 1 ISI interval dates for the remainder of FNP Unit 2 licensed life by terminating the current third ten-year ISI interval three and a half years early. After reviewing the request, staff has determined that additional information is needed to complete the review. The attached enclosure identifies the requested information.

DOCKET NO. 50-364 The staff requests the following additional information:
- 1. Clarify that the current code of record for Farley Nuclear Plant (FNP) Unit 2 third ten-year in-service inspection (ISI) interval is the 1989 Edition of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, no addenda, and the 2001 Edition of ASME Code,Section XI, through 2003 addenda is for the fourth ten-year ISI interval.
- 2. Please provide a table of the remaining ISIs and pressure tests required for FNP Unit 2, third period of the third ten-year ISI interval including any deferred requirements prior to the proposed closing of the third ISI ten-year interval. Also provide a separate table of ISI requirements not applicable or required anymore, because of the change to a later code edition for the fourth ten-year ISI interval.
- 3. Please provide clarification on completion of the third ISI interval requirements prior to starting the fourth ISI interval. Discuss how the percentage requirements of the third period of the third ISI interval will be reconciled with the percentage requirements of the fourth ISI interval. Justify the acceptability of not performing all inspections in the first period of the fourth interval that would have been required in the third period of the third interval and would not otherwise have been deleted.
