REPORT ON THE SAFETY ASPECTS OF THE LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION FOR THE VERMONT YANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION

Dear Dr. Shack:

During the 550th meeting of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS or the Committee) on March 6-7, 2008, the ACRS completed its review of the license renewal application (LRA) for the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station (VYNPS) and the associated final safety evaluation report (FSER) prepared by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (the NRC or staff). The staff appreciates the Committee=s expeditious and in-depth review of the VYNPS LRA and associated FSER.

In your letter to Chairman Klein, dated March 20, 2008, the Committee provided its final report on the renewal of the operating license for the VYNPS. The Committee recommended that the NRC renew the VYNPS operating license.

The staff recognizes the Committee=s commitment to safety and appreciates the Committee=s continued support of the license renewal process.
