1974-2005 Hudson River Ichthyoplankton, Fall Juvenile and Beach Seine Water Quality Survey Data Introduction For over thirty years ichthyoplankton, fall juvenile and beach seine surveys have been conducted in the Hudson River, affording researchers insight into selected fish species. In addition to the derivation of standing crop and mortality estimates for these selected fish species, water quality measurements have been recorded for several parameters at numerous station locations along the river. Table 1 identifies the sample and water quality parameters recorded and the years for which data are available.

Minor differences occur in sample collection methods and parameter recording through the thirty-three years of data collection, and an effort was made to standardize the data to the greatest extent possible so that cross year comparisons are reasonable and prudent.
Ichthyoplankton Sampling/Fall Juvenile During the early years of the Ichthyoplankton/Fall Juvenile sampling program, 1974 - 1981, water quality samples were collected concurrently with fish collections, and data were recorded for each individual sample collection. In 1982 and subsequent years the program design changed, and water quality samples were collected at fixed river mile and strata (SITE) locations which were independent of randomly assigned sample locations. Surface and bottom measurements were collected at shoal strata (PROGRAM=FS), and surface, mid-depth and bottom samples were collected in the channel strata (PROGRAM=LR).
Data recorded remained identical to earlier years.
Because of the separation of water quality samples from fish collections, it is not possible to directly associate an exact water quality sample time (TIME) with the water quality data for the years 1982 to the present. Therefore, the variable TIME does not appear in the data from 1982 forward.
Beach Seine Sampling The variable BEACH, a unique number assigned to designate each sample beach location, was recorded for beach seine samples beginning in 1980. Prior to that, river mile and site identify the 20962.003 Task 1 HR Ichthyoplankton.doc 2

sample location. Because more than one beach may exist within a river mile and site, it is not possible to retrospectively associate a beach number with the samples prior to 1980. From 1980 forward to the present, river mile, site, and beach number are associated with each beach seine water quality sample. In an effort to standardize the data to the greatest extent possible, the most recent latitude and longitude readings associated with sample beach locations, as implemented in 2003, were assigned to beach locations for the entire historic beach seine water quality database for which the variable BEACH could be designated.
Data File Presentation For ease of presentation and delivery, separate files have been prepared-for each of the three sampling programs and for subsets of years within program. The data have been presented in three intervals for each program type in order to maintain a manageable file size. All data are presented in Microsoft Excel (v 2003) workbooks. Data file name, program type, and years are presented in Table 2.
