January 9, 2008 Mr. G. R. Peterson Vice President McGuire Nuclear Station Duke Power Company LLC 12700 Hagers Ferry Road Huntersville, NC 28078
SUBJECT:
MCGUIRE NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT 2 (MCGUIRE UNIT 2), INSPECTION RESULTS FROM INSPECTIONS PERFORMED IN ACCORDANCE WITH REVISED NRC ORDER (EA-03-009) (TAC NO. MD4665)
Dear Mr. Morris:
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued a revised Order Modifying Licenses (Effective Immediately) (EA-03-009), dated February 20, 2004, (Order) to establish required inspections of reactor pressure vessel (RPV) heads and associated penetration nozzles at pressurized water reactors. These requirements were necessary to provide reasonable assurance that plant operations did not pose an undue risk to the public health and safety. The requirements of that Order were expected to remain in effect pending long-term resolution of RPV head penetration inspection requirements, which is expected to involve changes to the NRC regulations. For each inspection required in the Order, the licensee shall submit a report detailing the inspection results within sixty (60) days after returning the plant to operation.
By letter dated January 9, 2007, Duke Power Company LLC, (the licensee) submitted the required report summarzing the results of the inspections performed at McGuire Unit 2 during the End-of-Cycle 17 refueling outage. The NRC staff has reviewed the report and finds that you have met the information-submittal requirements of revised ordered EA-03-009.
Sincerely,
/RA/
