Indian Point Energy Center Status Report April 23, 2007 Operational Status Indian Point Unit 3 remains shutdown testing a new station transformer for the unit.
Indian Point Unit 2 nuclear power plant continues to operate at 100% power. 1P2 has been online for 54 days.
Groundwater Investigation Update Operators at Indian Point Energy Center are investigating a very minor steam leak in an auxiliary steam system pipe on the non-radiological side of the plant. A small amount of steam was observed wafting from the ground near the northwest corner of the Unit 3 turbine building in early April. The steam pipe is buried underground at a depth of 4-5 feet. The auxiliary steam is being routed from Unit 2 to provide heating for several buildings and components at Unit 3, while that unit is shutdown.
The steam originates on the secondary (non-radioactive) side of the 1P2 steam system and is piped to Unit 3 via a low pressure (50 psig) eight inch diameter pipe.
Secondary systems in Pressurized Water Reactors contain trace amounts of tritium.
The Unit 2 steam system contains about 2000 to 3000 pCi/L. As a point of reference, the EPA drinking water standard is 20,000 pCi/L. Indian Point and the surrounding communities obtain their drinking water from surface-water reservoirs.
Due to the very low levels of tritium present, the minor leak poses no health or safety threat to site workers or to the publi 'c. Dose impacts are bounded by the calculations performed as part of the groundwater investigation and are <1% of federal discharge limits.
The pipe has been isolated today noted Don Mayer, director Unit I projects. Isolating the pipe will stop the leak, however, the steam line may be needed temporarily during the Unit 3 restart.
Entergy is developing a plan to excavate the area and repair the pipe.
NRC to Hold Annual Assessment Meeting on Indian Point The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public meeting on April 26 at the Colonial Terrace in Cortlandt, N.Y. The meeting, which begins at 2:30 p~m., will start with a poster session on various topics of interest. The evening meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 9:30 p.m. The poster session will run concurrently with the evening meeting. A question and answer period will follow the presentations.
