- Uldis, Welcome to your new position! We have been looking forward to your start date, and to officially being able to work with you. I know that you have really hit the ground at full speed, with all of the activity occurring this week at Vermont Yankee.
I understand that you have been onsite today, looking at the cooling towers. Please contact me at any time, if you have any questions on this issue or on any other items. Of course, the other big news with VY today is the 72-hour notice given to Entergy by the union workers. This raises the possibility of a strike, that could begin this weekend. As you know, Entergy has contingency staffing plans in the event a strike does occur. NRC also has a staffing plan that will increase our presence at the site in such an event. I will, of course, communicate with DPS any information we receive over the weekend on this matter.
At this time, Sarah Hoffman is the formal SLO-Designee for Vermont. However, that position was previously filled by your predecessor, Bill Sherman. I will contact Sarah, and ask that Commissioner O'Brien send a letter naming you as the Designee, if that is his desire. In the meantime, we will continue to communicate principally through Sarah, but I have added you to the NRC's distribution lists for Vermont Yankee, and Nancy and I will include you in our communications and list you as a backup to Sarah and Hans.
As you may know, Mr. Jamie Benjamin is currently the NRC's Acting Senior Resident Inspector at VY. He will be there for the next month or so. Later in the Fall, we will have a new senior resident starting at the plant. I would like to come up at that time, so that he and I can meet you together. I'll send you some more information on the new resident and work out a date for a meet and greet in the next few weeks. If you need to contact Jamie directly, you may call the NRC resident office at VY at 802-257-4319.
Of course, Nancy and I are available as your primary sources of information on all matters related to VY or to NRC activities in general. We both serve as the Region I State Liaison Officers, but we each focus on specific areas; Nancy is the primary contact for Emergency Preparedness and security issues, and I am the primary contact for normal plant operations, license renewal, and all other general matters. Of course, we back each other up, so you can go to either of us for most matters. our contact info is below:
