Re: UFMs Sorry I missed your call, Mike. I tried to call back, but missed you.

We're continuing to make progress on the UFM generic communication. However, in view of the time and effort it may take to address the feedback from the public meeting and the ACRS, I'm reconsidering whether we'll be ready to present a complete recommendation to the CRGR in August. I hope to get a decision on the schedule update next week.

As we explained to the ACRS, the UFM issues, including followup on Crossflow are not an immediate safety issue. On this basis, we have not taken any specific, licensing actions for plants using Crossflow or LEFM instruments, nor have we suspended anyspecific uprate reviews that may rely on UFM technology.

The Task Group recommendations are being pursued in the UFM generic communication. As such, their findings represent work-in-progress, rather than a staff position that would apply to individual licensing actions. I would expect future MURs to address the generic communication to the extent that it describes a staff position on the use of UFMs for demonstrating compliance with the licensed power level.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Chris

Mr. Grimes, Any further developments on the possible UFM generic communication?

Also, it seems a bit unusual that the Palisades MUR uprate was issued June 23 without making any reference to the work of the Crossflow allegation task group and that the uprate was not mentioned at the two public meetings that discussed the work of the task group. Someone at NRC said this is a legitimate question to ask, but I always worry that I may be making something a lot bigger that it really is, when in fact there is a simple explanation. Any background guidance?
