Dear Ms. Milligan:
The State of Wisconsin requests assistance from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in obtaining potassium iodide (KI) to distribute to Wisconsin residents living in risk counties near nuclear power plants. In 2006, the State decided to pre-distribute potassium iodide (KI) to any interested person living within 10 miles of a nuclear plant impacting Wisconsin, provided the local county board or equivalent supported the activity. There were no interested risk counties, at that time. Recently, the Wisconsin risk county nearest the Prairie Island nuclear plant decided to accept the state offer of free KI. As a'result, the Wisconsin Dept. of Health and Family Services is requesting the needed KI from the NRC. We plan to implement a KI pre-distribution program, in cooperation with the State of Minnesota, in early 2008.
Details, as follows:
Nuclear Plant: Prairie Island (on MIN side of MN/WI border near red Wing, MvN)
How much KI requested?
32,000 (65 mg) KI tablets
[2 day supply for estimated 8,000 residents living in Pierce County, WI within 10 miles of plant]
