August 23, 2007 Ms. Audrey Kohnen, President Prairie Island Tribal Council Prairie Island Community Center 5636 Sturgeon Lake Road Welch, MN 55089
Dear Ms. Kohnen:
SUBJECT:
LOCAL OUTREACH INITIATIVE The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) is responsible for regulation of the Prairie Island nuclear power plant located next to tribal lands. This year, we are beginning an outreach initiative to meet with county government officials, mayors, and tribal representatives local to the 16 nuclear power plants that we regulate within Region III. We plan to explain NRCs role and mission, and establish a point of contact in the event you have questions regarding NRC activities in the future. We would also like to tell you about our resident inspector program, security enhancements and other outreach activities that the NRC is conducting that may involve members of the public around the plant.
I would like to meet with you at your office for a brief, informational meeting and plan on contacting you in the next several weeks to establish a date and time. In the meantime, please contact me at (630) 829-9659, or via email at sam9@nrc.gov, if you have any questions.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
/RA/
