SUBJECT:
ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF WITHDRAWAL OF BWRVIP-41 AND BWRVIP-138 REPORTS (MD0048)
Dear Mr. Libra:
By letter dated July 18, 2007, the Boiling Water Reactor Vessel and Internals Project (BWRVIP) informed the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff of the withdrawal of the following two reports:
BWRVIP-41, Revision 1, BWR Jet Pump Assembly Inspection and Flaw Evaluation Guidelines, August 2005 BWRVIP-138, Updated Jet Pump Beam Inspection and Flaw Evaluation Guidelines, December 2004.
The NRC staff submitted requests for additional information (RAIs) in its letter dated May 12, 2006, concerning the two reports. In order to address the NRC staffs RAIs, the BWRVIP is performing detailed analyses of the jet pump beams. However, due to performing these analyses, the agreed upon date, specified in the NRC letter dated February 24, 2006, for the BWRVIP submittal of their responses to the NRC staffs RAIs has passed. Therefore, the BWRVIP is withdrawing the two reports, and the applicable licensees will continue to implement the NRC approved guidance in BWRVIP-41 and any additional guidance in BWRVIP-41, Revision 1 and BWRVIP-138 which is more conservative than the previously approved guidance.
The NRC staff acknowledges the withdrawal of the BWRVIP-41, Revision 1 and BWRVIP-138 reports, and will discontinue the review of the subject reports. The NRC staff also understands that the BWR licensees will use the BWRVIP-41 report approved by the staff in its letter dated February 4, 2001, and any guidance in the BWRVIP-41, Revision 1 and BWRVIP-138 reports that is more conservative than the BWRVIP-41 report what was approved by the NRC in its letter dated February 4, 2001, as a basis for the inspection and evaluation of BWR jet pumps.
Upon completion of the analyses, the BWRVIP will incorporate the results of the analyses and the RAI responses into new revisions of the two reports, and submit these reports to the NRC staff for approval.
If you have any questions regarding this letter, please contact Mr. John Honcharik of my staff at (301) 415-1157.
Sincerely,
/RA/ Simon Sheng for Matthew A. Mitchell, Chief Vessels & Internals Integrity Branch Division of Component Integrity Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Project No. 704 cc: BWRVIP Service List Upon completion of the analyses, the BWRVIP will incorporate the results of the analyses and the RAI responses into new revisions of the two reports, and submit these reports to the NRC staff for approval.
If you have any questions regarding this letter, please contact Mr. John Honcharik of my staff at (301) 415-1157.
Sincerely,
