Dear Ms. Seckerson:
I am responding to your letter of May 18, 2007, regarding Entergys formal filing of a license renewal application for Indian Point Nuclear Generating Units 2 & 3. Specifically, your letter addressed the Westchester County Board of Legislators Resolution 87-2007, approved May 8, 2007, which provided two pertinent resolutions. The first resolution urged that the NRC hold hearings in Westchester County at a time and place that will allow maximum input from Westchester residents. The second requested that NRC representatives coordinate these meetings with the Board of Legislators.
NRC Chairman Klein recently responded to a letter from Congressman John Hall about holding public meetings in the vicinity of Indian Point. Weve enclosed a copy of the reply, which outlines some of the opportunities for public involvement in our license renewal review process.
As stated in Chairman Kleins letter, we value openness in our activities and seek meaningful public participation in our licensing processes. In addition to the formal processes that already exist for members of the public to request a hearing for pending licensing actions that potentially affect their communities, the NRC makes special efforts to notify the public of pending hearings and related meetings involving licensing actions that are of significant public interest. These efforts have included issuing press releases or placing announcements in local newspapers. At a minimum, the NRC issues meeting notices for all public meetings on its website at www.nrc.gov. The NRC also maintains an electronic list server system at www.nrc.gov/public-involve/listserver.html, which enables any member of the public to receive automatic electronic notification of news and information related to Indian Point.
As the Chairmans letter also indicates, we have specifically enhanced our communications with the public during the license renewal process for Indian Point. As an example of our public outreach efforts, we hosted a government-to-government meeting on March 20, 2007. We plan to continue to enhance our communications and outreach efforts, including continued communication with the County Executives for the four counties surrounding Indian Point when important agency actions or events are scheduled.
To further enhance awareness for the County Executives, I have asked my staff to add you to our normal distribution list for meeting notices related to Indian Point. You will now be mailed a copy of each public meeting notice at least 10 days prior to any meeting taking place.
