Dear Mr. Chairman:
Enclosed for your information is a copy of a petition for rulemaking (PRM-50-85) requesting that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) amend 10 CFR Part 50, Domestic Licensing of Production and Utilization Facilities. The petition was filed on behalf of Eric Epstein, Three Mile Island Alert, Inc.
The petition requests that 10 CFR Part 50 be amended to require that all host school pick-up centers be at a minimum distance of five to ten miles beyond the radiation plume exposure boundary zone to ensure that all school children are protected in the event of a radiological emergency. Also enclosed is a copy of the Federal Register notice that contains additional information concerning the petition. The notice will request public comment for a 75-day period.
