TRIP REPORT SUMMARIZING MAY 29, 2007 VISIT TO VERMONTYANKEE NUCLEAR POWER STATION REGARDING THE LICENSE RENEWAL ENVIRONMENTAL REVIEWOn May 29, 2007, Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) met with the licensee (Entergy) andits contractor, Normadeau and Associates, Inc. (Normadeau) at the Vermont Yankee NuclearPower Station (VYNPS) to discuss the preliminary results of the aquatic studies conducted insupport of a Clean Water Act Section 316(b) Phase II Comprehensive Demonstration Plan(CDP) at VYNPS during 2006 and 2007. A list of the attendees is provided in the enclosure. In support of VYNPS's application for renewal of its National Pollution Discharge EliminationSystem (NPDES) Permit (the permit is currently stayed by the Vermont State EnvironmentalCourt and VYNPS is currently operating under its previous permit) and as part of their CDP,Entergy contracted Normadeau to conduct aquatic ecology studies on the Connecticut River inthe plant vicinity as well as in-plant impingement and entrainment sampling. In-plantimpingement sampling was conducted in 2005 and 2006 from April 11 - June 15, and fromAugust 1 - October 31. In-plant entrainment sampling was conducted in 2005 and 2006 fromApril 1 - September 30. Ichtyoplankton tows in the Connecticut River in front of VYNPS's intakewere conducted in 2005 and 2006 from April 1 - April 30 and July 16 - September 30. The purpose of the May 29 meeting was for Entergy and Normandeau to present thepreliminary findings of the 316(b) sampling program (2005 and 2006) to the NRC. The NRC had expressed interest in the preliminary results of the studies to determine if the data is consistent with previous studies conducted at the site. This trip report serves to document the NRC's visit to the site and summarize the presentation provided by Normandeau.Normandeau's presentation focused on the data collected during the 2005 and 2006impingement and entrainment sampling effort. Species composition and abundance data were summarized.

E. Benner, et. al.-2-Data collected during 2005 and 2006 were then compared to historical sampling data, bothimpingement sampling at VYNPS intake and in-river ichthyoplankton sampling in Vernon pool. Based on the data presented for 2005 and 2006 and the comparison to the historical record, the NRC staff determined that the impingement data and ichthyoplankton densities collected in2005 and 2006 are consistent with data and conclusions from previous studies conducted atVYNPS and in Vernon Pool and support the conclusions in the December 2006 SEIS for VYNPS.
