ASSESSMENT FOLLOW-UP LETTER - JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT
Dear Mr. Johnson:
On May 15, 2007, we informed you that the NRC staff completed, as part of our quarterly review, an update of our assessment of the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant. The assessment evaluated performance indicators (PIs) and inspection results. The purpose of this letter is to inform you of your safety performance during this period and our plans for a future inspection at your facility. This letter supplements, but does not supercede, our annual assessment letter issued on March 1, 2007.
Our review had identified that you had numerically crossed the threshold from Green to White for the Unit 2 Mitigating System Performance Index, Residual Heat Removal (RHR) Systems PI. However, based on re-evaluation of the data, it appears that established NRC and industry accepted significant digit rounding guidance was not properly taken into account in the initial interpretation of the data.
As a result, we have now assessed that Farley Unit 2 performance will remain in the Licensee Response column of the NRCs Action Matrix. Therefore, we will not conduct any supplemental inspection in this area at this time.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2.390 of the NRCs Rules of Practice, a copy of this letter will be made available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room or from the Publicly Available Records (PARS) component of NRC's document system (ADAMS).
ADAMS is accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html (the Public Electronic Reading Room).
Please contact Mr. Scott Shaeffer at 404-562-4521 with any questions you may have regarding this letter.
Sincerely;
/RA/
