May 4, 2007 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555-0001 Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station (PBAPS) Unit 1 Facility Operating License No. DPR-1 2 NRC Docket No. 50-171
Reference:
2006 PBAPS Radioactive Effluent Release Report No. 49 for Units 1, 2, 3 and Independent Spent Fuel Storage Installation
Subject:
PBAPS Unit 1 Decommissioning Status Report In accordance with Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station, Unit 1 Technical Specifications, an annual report is required to:
Describe the results of facility radiation surveys, Report the quantities of radioactive effluents released, Report the status of the facility and an evaluate of the performance of security and surveillance measures, and Provide containment vessel accumulated water analyses, as applicable.
Radiation Surveys:
Radiological surveys are performed semi-annually in the accessible areas of the exclusion area.
In 2006, radiation levels did not exceed 0.2 mrem/hour and all smearable contamination levels were less than 1000 dpm/1OOcm 2 beta-gamma.
Quantities of Radioactive Effluents Released:
On July 6, 2006, routine sampling of Unit 1 Radwaste Sump showed no gamma activity and was released to the discharge canal. Subsequently, a new sample was taken January 3, 2007 and sampled for gamma activity and tritium to support additional environmental monitoring at the station. No gamma activity was found but a tritium concentration of 9260 pCi/L was detected. For the purposes of the 2006 Radioactive Effluence Report the concentration of tritium found in January, 2007 was used to calculate the release in July 2006.
The July 2006 release was conservatively estimated at 10,000 gallons of water. The calculated value included in the 2006 annual effluents report was 3.21 E-9 mRem total body and 3.21 E-9 mRem critical organ (Child Liver). This release is discussed further in the referenced report.

Status of Facility and an Evaluation of the Performance of Security and Surveillance Measures:
There were no significant events involving Unit 1 during 2006. The unit remains in the SAFSTOR status of decommissioning.
All exclusion area barriers as described in the Technical Specifications are maintained locked except when opened to provide access and egress for inspections, surveys, or repairs. Exclusion area barriers have not visually degraded from previous reports. Semi-annual inspections (surveillances) are performed.
Containment Vessel Accumulated Water Analyses:
No water was identified in the Unit 1 Containment Sump during the semi-annual inspections.
