Spent Fuel Storage at Vermont Yankee

Dear Sir or Madam:

I live six miles from the Entergy Nuclear Vermont Yankee plant. This DOCKETED is an aged plant, running at 120% of its design capacity, aiming for USNRC a twenty year extension on its operating license, perched on the flood plain of the Connecticut River. They are planning on siting hot March 19, 2007 (2:25pm) nuclear materials in tightly packed dry cask storage containers on that flood plain. Dry cask containers, as you know, have already OFFICE OF SECRETARY failed around the nation and nuclear engineers have yet to come up RULEMAKINGS AND with a solution to leaking casks in Michigan, casks that have been ADJUDICATIONS STAFF leaking for more than ten years.

Docket No. 50-271-LR You see where we're going with this, don't you?

Any reasonable person would protest. And I do.

But we have to add to this the very real possibility of terrorist strikes on the plant and/or its wastes. One mortar round, one RPG, one small private plane, and New England could be rendered uninhabitable: our Chernobyl. As you must know, Chernobyl was caused by the hubris of a party official who was pushing the envelope and basically blew up that corner of Russia, contaminating countries all around the world.

Prudence dictates that you work not to facilitate the licensing of this plant, but to close it down and get its wastes dispersed and relocated to a safer location. A Federal court has recently ruled that you must take into account the consequences of an increasingly likely deliberate attack on the facility. I call on you to do so.

Sincerely, Scott Ainslie 101 Washington St.
