PRM-51 -11 To whom it may concern:
I am a physician practicing locally in the area directly affected by the Limerick Nuclear Power Plant. I am also a member of Physicians For Social Responsibility. A document published by the PSR is the springboard for my comments to you regarding nuclear power in general and the Limerick plant in specific. I am referring to the document located at http://www.psrenergysecurity.org/nuclear.pdf. The scientific evidence clearly implicates radioactive material at any and all concentrations as having a significant negative impact on many important health parameters for local residents. In my estimation, the most devastating of these impacts involves the impact on fetuses and children who are the most vulnerable members of our citizenry while also being the least enfranchised.
I can find nothing in the medical or scientific literature to support the continued risk of exposure to nuclear radiation in the face of the threat of terrorism, the lack of economic justification and the known hazards to present and future generations. Please have the courage to decommission the Limerick Power Plant and do it very carefully. I also support universal cord blood banking by state and local health insurance companies to address the increased incidence of leukemia and other cancers which are related to radiation pollution. Fortunately, there are now viable alternatives to nuclear power in the form of wind and solar energy as well as increased energy conservation which do not have a negative impact on human health.
