SUBJECT:

BROWNS FERRY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1, 2 AND 3 - RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 2006-03: POTENTIALLY NONCONFORMING HEMYC AND MT FIRE BARRIER CONFIGURATIONS (TAC NOS. MD1552, MD1553 AND MD1554)

Dear Mr. Singer:

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) acknowledges the receipt of your response to Generic Letter (GL) 2006-03, Potentially Nonconforming Hemyc and MT Fire Barrier Configurations. Under oath or affirmation, in your response dated June 7, 2006, you stated that Hemyc or MT fire barrier materials are not used at Browns Ferry Nuclear Plant, Units 1, 2 and 3.

Also, you stated that Browns Ferry uses fire barriers other than Hemyc or MT, which are designed and installed as approved by the NRC staff. Your responses to GL 92-08, Thermo-Lag 330-1 Fire Barriers described the fire barriers used to separate redundant safe shutdown trains located within the same fire area at Browns Ferry. Your March 22, 1995, letter states that Browns Ferrys corrective actions associated with GL 92-08 will be completed and that these barriers will meet regulatory requirements. This statement is reiterated in the November 2, 1995, Safety Evaluation Report for Browns Ferry. The basis for stating that these other fire barriers have been designed and installed in accordance with NRC guidance should be maintained on site, and will be subject to inspection during the normal NRC inspection process.

If you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 415-4041.

Sincerely,

/RA/
