- 1-800-633-6101 Robert L. Ehrlich, Jr.
Kendl P. Philbrick Governor Secretary Michael S. Steele Lt. Governor JAN 1 2 2007 Mr. Nader Mamish, Deputy Director Division Preparedness and Response US Nuclear Regulatory Commission MS 06H2 Washington, DC 20555
Dear Mr. Mamish:
Thank you for your assistance regarding the replacement of Maryland's expiring Potassiuini oiide (KI) tablets from either the Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) or the Vendor Management Inventory (VMI). Although the Maryland Department of Environment (MDE) hopes that these supplies are never needed,, it is necessary for Maryland to remain prepared with current prophylactic doses to supplement public evacuation or sheltering in place during a nuclear emergency. MDE is making this request now because, should it become necessary to declare a State of Emergency, these supplies will need to be immediately available.
Approximately seven years ago, MDE received 161,000 unit doses of 130 mg tablets and 35,030 unit doses of 65 mg tablets from your agency. All of those doses will expire in March 2007. The Maryland counties within Emergency Protection Zones have already experienced some population growth, plus an additional 20 percent increase in population is projected for Harford and Cecil counties. Maryland is requesting 192,720 unit doses of 130 mg tablets, 36,955 unit doses of 65 mg tablets and 3,695 unit doses of 65 mg liquid at this time. This amount will also replenish expired KI for emergency workers in the affected EPZ counties.
The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) in cooperation with local Emergency Operations Centers will pre-distribute the KI tablets and liquid through the local Departments of Health in the Emergency Protection Zones of the Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station and the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant through DHMH's network of local healthofficers.
