GRASS FIRE ON COMPANY PROPERTY NEAR THE DIABLO CANYON POWER PLANT

Subject:

On January 17, 2007, the California Department of Forestry (CDF) declared that the grass fire on PG&E property near the Diablo Canyon plant was extinguished. On January 14, 2007, the licensee was notified of a grass fire approximately 1.5 miles north of the site. Approximately 300 acres have been burned by the grass fire. The CDF firefighting efforts initially involved approximately 200 firefighters, two airplanes, and two helicopters. The CDF established fire breaks near the plant, which prevented the fire from affecting the plant or any transmission lines. The fire continued to spread to the north away from the plant. The licensee had made preparations to shut down the plant if the fire affected the normal plant output 500 kV transmission lines. Additionally, the licensee developed contingency plans if the fire affected the 230 kV preferred power transmission line to the plants vital busses. The fire did not affect the offsite transmission lines.

The licensee did not enter their Emergency Plan because the entry criteria were not satisfied in that the fire did not impact equipment or power sources in or near the protected area. The licensee issued a 50.72 notification due to the considerable local public interest.

This morning report is being submitted for information only. The senior resident inspector responded to the site and monitored firefighting efforts until the fire was declared out.
