SUBJECT:

VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2, RECEIPT OF RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 2006-03, POTENTIALLY NONCONFORMING HEMYC AND MT FIRE BARRIER CONFIGURATIONS (TAC NOS. MD1645, MD1646)

Dear Mr. Grissette:

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) acknowledges the receipt of your response, dated June 9, 2006, to Generic Letter 2006-03, Potentially Nonconforming Hemyc and MT Fire Barrier Configurations. Under oath or affirmation, your response states that Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2, do not rely on the Hemyc and MT fire barrier systems. Under oath and affirmation, your response also states that other fire barrier systems that separate redundant safe shutdown trains located within the same fire area have been designed and installed in accordance with current NRC guidance. Based on your response, the basis for stating that these other fire barriers have been designed and installed in accordance with current NRC guidance should be maintained on site, and will be subject to inspection during the normal NRC inspection process.

If you have any questions regarding this response, please contact me at 301-415-1493 or rem@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/
