Hoots (Exelon Generation Company, LLC) to U. S. NRC, Pressurizer Weld Overlay Examination Results Related to Byron Station Relief Request l3R-08, dated October 26, 2006 During the review of the Reference 1 and Reference 2 submittals, the NRC determined that a commitment to provide information on the results of the ultrasonic examinations of the Byron Station Unit 2 pressurizer overlays is required to obtain approval of Relief Request 13R-08 for Byron Station Unit 2.
In accordance with this request, Exelon Generation Company, LLC (EGC) is committing to provide the details of the ultrasonic examination results of the strUctural weld overlays on the Byron Station Unit 2 pressurizer nozzle safe-ends to the NRC within 14 days of the completion of the final ultrasonic examination.
December 14, 2006 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page 2 EGC will notify the NRC Project Manager for Byron Station when the examination of the final structural weld overlay for Byron Station Unit 2 is complete. These examinations are planned as part of the Byron Station Unit 2 weld overlay project targeted for the Spring 2007 refueling outage and, therefore, approval of relief request 13R-08 is requested by March 24, 2007.
This same commitment was required for approval of Relief Request 13R-08 for Byron Station Unit 1 and was provided in the Reference 3 submittal. In accordance with this commitment, the results of the Byron Station Unit 1 ultrasonic examinations of the structural weld overlays were provided in the Reference 4 submittal.
The attachment to this letter provides the details of this EGC commitment for Byron Station Unit 2. Should you have any questions concerning this letter, please contact William Grundmann at (815) 406-2800.
Respectfully, David M. Hoots Site Vice President Byron Station

EGC commits to providing the NRC the results of the ultrasonic examination of the structural weld overlays on the Byron Station Unit 2 pressurizer safe-ends. Within 14 days after Yes No the completion of the The results will include: last ultrasonic
- a listing of indications detected,1 examination of the
- the disposition of all indications weld overlays using the standards of ASME performed during the Section Xl, JWB-3514-2 and/or Spring 2007 Byron IWB-3514-3 criteria and, if Station Unit 2 possible, refueling outage
- the type and nature of the (B2R13).
indications 2 Also included in the results will be a discussion of any repairs to the overlay material and/or base metal and the reason for the repair.
Subsequent lnservice examination of the structural weld overlays on pressurizer will be in accordance with ASME Section Xl, Appendix 0, 0-4300 1 The recording criteria of the ultrasonic examination procedure to be used for the examination of the Byron Station Unit 2 pressurizer overlays requires that all indications, regardless of amplitude, be investigated to the extent necessary to provide accurate characterization, identity, and location.
Additionally, the procedure requires that all indications, regardless of amplitude, that cannot be clearly attributed to the geometry of the overlay configuration be considered flaw indications.
2 The ultrasonic examination procedure requires that all suspected flaw indications are to be plotted on a cross sectional drawing of the weld and that the plots should accurately identify the specific origin of the reflector.
