No.06-149 December 8, 2006NRC ANNOUNCES AVAILABILITY OF LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATIONFOR SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANTThe Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced today that an application for a 20-yearrenewal of the operating license for the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1, is available for

public review.The Shearon Harris plant is a pressurized wa ter reactor located approximately 20 milessouthwest of Raleigh, N.C. The current operating license expires Oct. 24, 2026. The applicant,Carolina Power and Light (a subsidiary of Progress Energy), submitted the renewal application Nov.

16. The application is available on the NRC Web site at this address:http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/operating/licensing/renewal/applications.html . The NRC staff is currently conducting its initia l reviews of the app lication to determinewhether it contains enough information for the re quired formal reviews. If the application hassufficient information, the NRC will formally "docket," or file it and will announce an opportunity for the public to request an adjudicatory hearing on the renewal request.
